Training

UTOP leverages the teaching expertise of the STEP Lab (Scheller Teacher Education Program) to design and facilitate training and support for undergraduate teachers, tutors, mentors, and curriculum designers.

Take a look at the highly interactive, foundational trainings we’ve designed. These are meant to be applicable to a wide variety of teaching experiences and introduce concepts that are foundational to understanding and embodying more complex theories of teaching + learning.

UTOP Training

Actionable – Thought Provoking – Engaging

Workshop: The Learning Cycle

This 2-hour workshop uses The 5 Step Learning Cycle as defined by Mike Bell in The Fundamentals of Teaching as a framework to:

– Understand how learning happens
– Practice designing high impact learning experiences for any setting
– Experience effective strategies for every phase of the learning cycle and leave with a unique set of facilitator protocol cards

Workshop: Impact with Intention

This 2-hour workshop is Based on the Instructional Core Model defined in the book Instructional Rounds in Education: A Network Approach to Improving Teaching and Learning.  We present The Instructional Core as a framework to:

– Examine how the interactions between learners, facilitators, and content impact the learning experience
– Reflect on your teaching theory and vision for success
– Experience effective and dynamic instructional practices modeled in real time and leave with a unique set of facilitator protocol cards

Flipped + Flexible: Impact with Intention
@utop_mit

This flipped and flexible model has the same learning outcomes as the Impact with Intention workshop, but uses Instagram (@utop_mit) reels to replace all the lecturing and reading that happens during the full 2-hour workshop.

Programs can schedule a 1-hour workshop at their convenience. At least one week before the workshop participants must engage with approximately 20 Instagram reels. The 1-hour workshop will be highly interactive and provide a space to discuss and practice the ideas introduced via Instagram.

We encourage programs to schedule UTOP to facilitate a training during one of your regularly scheduled meeting times. Trainings are free and scheduling is flexible. Online training is an option. Send us an email and tell us about your programs unique needs.
